March 21st Renée was invited for a guest lecture and case study exercise on energy transition for 2nd year landscape architecture students at the Academie van Bouwkunst in Amsterdam. After a ‘pressure cooker’ introduction into the design of sustainable energy landscapes, the students developed visions for sustainable energy futures for the municipality of Overbetuwe. The students worked with the five-step approach for planning and design of sustainable energy landscapes, starting with a brief landscape and energy potential analysis. Four socio-economic scenarios formed the basis for envisioning desired energy futures – this to be able to deal with uncertainties when planning for the long-term. To conclude, the four scenarios have been compared to determine robust energy-conscious interventions, which could be the starting point for implementation of energy transition in the municipality.

During the presentations, students discovered that it is quite a challenge in all four scenarios to generate the municipality’s energy demand within the municipal borders, especially if it is tried to avoid large-scale wind energy.
